The bicentennial commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition began in 2003 and continued through 2006. The route followed by the original Corps of Volunteers for Northwestern Discovery lies within eight Corps Districts. Over 1,100 miles of the Expedition's water route is directly managed by the Corps, the majority of which lies within NWD. Because the Corps directly or indirectly manages more of the trail than any other entity (more than 90%), and because the expedition was an Army reconnaissance mission that included exploring and mapping the western United States, the Corps played a significant role in the observance of the bicentennial. The Corps worked closely with Federal, Tribal, State, local, and private entities through the National Council for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial to advance understanding of the Army’s role in the original expedition, and of the Corps’ role as stewards of much of the route today.
